ok, i did all that you said, selective start, no sound, reinstalling, the works. the game lasted for two really  good sessions  of about 5 hours apiece then i got a blue screen crash again. it said D.E.P. shut the  game down. i tried to  make H2 an exception but it said i could not. now every time i try to play , it crashes pretty quickly. and when i restart and  click resume it  is a way earlier  checkpoint.  any ideas ?  dxdiag posted  below

DEP eh? Could be a conflicting program, or a trainer/ hack... Do you mod? if so, don't log into a LIVE account, make a local one and use that one instead with modded maps. THAT or your install is corrupted, once again H2V can does this so you need to see if again something is interfering with it.
You see DEP acts in H2V as an anti-cheat mechanism. So anything it sees as an attempt to cheat and it gets pissed off, sometimes crashing the whole thing.

If it's something graphical; as you've got quite a good rig, but seeing as H2V is a bad port,- It could be some minor setting, like the Resolution?

Have you run H2V as admin?

thanks for the quick reply.

 let me 1st say that i do NOT mod at all. not technically  gifted enough for that. lol. i have turned  off all the  background programs that i am able to  i did try to run H2 as Administrator but  when i right clicked the  shortcut  it did not  offer  run as Admin as an option. is there another way to force that ? i did matcfh the screen refresh rate and the screen res to the  same settings .  so, not sure the  problem lies there. this is THE twitchiest game ever. lol

by the way, is the much vaunted Scarab Gun available  in Live  in single  player  or  only  multi player ?

To force the game to run under admin mode, go to the game folder (C:\program files\microsoft games\halo 2\) and right-click the startup.exe, and the halo2.exe and select properties-> compatibility and tick the box "run as admin".

The scarab gun is available in the campaign the same way you could glitch it in the xbox version. (the metropolis, banshee trick, there are some tutorials on youtube... OR once again modding....)

Did you try playing on a local account? (not LIVE connected one, easy to make one in game too.)

Did you try playing in different settings? If it affected the length you could play?

i wll try the "run as administrator" trick.  i have tried to play under a  local account( not signed  into live,no achievements,lol) and  i still get the same crashes. i will try to run  it with different settings  such as resolution and stuff and see how  it fares with that. thanks

ok, ive tried everything you've said and when i get to "the arbiter" level, it freezes my computer. and ive tried to select "the arbiter" manually but it still does the same thing. i have an ATI X1250,AMD athlon single core 1.6 GHz (surprisingly plays well O_O), and 3 gigs of RAM. ive gotten a glimpse of the level where your holding an energy sword, but then it just dies. ive tried about 20 times to play it, but everytime, it freezes. ive tried it in windowed, full, and a bunch of different options. everything is on for "proformance" on my video card. ive gotten so sick of trying, that ive beaten the levels before it in all 4 difficulties. please help meh D= thanks.

The gfx card/chip you're using is most likely NOT supported... Sorry to break the news to you like this.
Wait, I'm confused; you've been able to play on the same computer the game through before but not now? Corrupted files?

A note on performance issues:

After running Halo2 just fine on an old 2004 computer, and then upgrading to a new, beefy computer at the start of this year, I found that on the new computer Halo2 had choppy performance where the game would stutter like a heartbeat, updating the screen at maybe 10 fps (estimated). The sound played fine despite the video's choppiness.

After a run-through with MS' customer service reps, the issue was finally discovered to be that I had two audio cards active, my normal one, and then one for HDMI audio through my video card. Disabling the HDMI one (since I don't use it) in the Device manager (hit win+R and type devmgmt.msc) under "Sound, video and game controllers" was what finally resolved the issue.

The important thing is that if this is the issue giving you performance troubles it will not be cleared up when you run Halo2 with the -nosound parameter. Choppy performance will be just as bad with that parameter as without. This is one you'll have to check for manually.
