    Halo 2 Vista Crashes

Hi guys, about 30 seconds into gameplay Halo 2 just crashes to a black screen and Windows says it has an encountered an error and has to close, now ive sort of found out what the problem is, I ran the game with the -nosound parameter and it doesnt crash at all, so it leads me to think its my sound card drivers but ive already got the latest drivers for them here are my system specs.

    P5W DH Deluxe (Onboard Sound)

    E6600 Core 2

    8800GTX 768mb Inno3d (Latest Drivers)

    2gb Corsair DDR667 Ram

    2x 10,000RPM WD 36gb Raptor HDD's

    2x 200GB Maxtor HDD's

    Windows Vista Ultimate

Any help would be appreciated, thanks in advance!

    Re: Halo 2 Vista Crashes

Disable SLI and change game resolution to 1028X768. That what I had to do.

    Re: Halo 2 Vista Crashes

I get exactly the same issue.  However, I have the same RAM and same CPU, but I have a Soundblaster X-Fi sound card, and the -nosound switch didn't fix it for me.

Also tried dropping the resolution to 1024x768 (read elsewhere) and that didn't help.  Called up MS support, was on phone for 30 mins with tech (most of it waiting as he had no idea about the game), and go nowhere.

I have a 7900GTX card also.  I have the latest Halo Patch (downloaded from MS Halo site as of yesterday) and can't get the game to work properly at all.

May seriously consider returning it to shop for a refund, as not happy so far.  Too many bugs (including the issue with signing in to Live and Downloading profile) which seems to have been fixed now.

    Anyone else having this issue?

    Re: Halo 2 Vista Crashes

I too am having issues with Halo 2 crashing during the single player campaign. What pisses my off the most is that when I start the game back up it reverts to the last time I saved and quit the game. I have lost several hours because of having to play through levels I had already completed because when the game crashes it corrupts the save points.

    Core 2 Duo 6400, 2GB ram, Nvidia 7900GS, Creative X-Fi audio, game resolution 1024x768

I'm having the exact same issue as well. I can't even download my profile cause I soon as I go to download my profile the game crashes...and the soundcard thing doesn't help either.

    Re: Halo 2 Vista Crashes

Okay I suffered from the problem of my Halo 2 crashing randomly saying "Halo 2 has stopped working". I have fixed this problem as it turns out there was a program confliction. First make sure you have the latest graphics card driver for your graphics card. If so then to resolve this issue you need to discover what your specific program confliction is. First off to double-check to make sure this is a program confliction do the following:

    1. Click Start and type "msconfig" into the search bar
    2. Click the Services tab
    3. Check the box "Hide all Microsoft services"
    4. Then click "disable all" (reminder: make sure you have all Microsoft services hidden)
    5. Restart you computer and run Halo 2.

If it then works you have a program confliction and need to manually figure out by re-enabling these programs 1 by 1 to figure out which program(s) are conflicting. Good luck and I hope this helps people with this issue.

    Re: Halo 2 Vista Crashes

Yes, i have the same problem and i have no idea what to do =(. i've tried 12 of the 14 methods on microsoft.com, called microsoft and gone to several stores to see whats up. i have no idea. the first time i didnt close halo after it crashed, i got a message asking me to send information. i clicked on details and it says:

Files that help describe the problem:

      C:\Users\HP_Administrator\AppData\Local\Temp\WERDC53.tmp.version.txt

      C:\Users\HP_Administrator\AppData\Local\Temp\WERED5B.tmp.appcompat.txt

      C:\Users\HP_Administrator\AppData\Local\Temp\WERED9A.tmp.hdmp

so i went there and couldnt find the files but a file called startup.exe with a picture of a halo thingy on it caught my eye. i clicked on it and it said it couldn't run because pccompat.dll is missing so i went into my halo 2 disc and found that file and put it in there. then it said that sll_dll.dll was missing so i found that and put it in there as well. after, it said that it couldnt start because certain files were missing. the files were not specified so i just reinstalled the game as it told me to. i kept having the same problem so i figured my disc was to blame. today i went to get a refund and buy a new one. sadly, it still isnt working. i looked at the details of the latest crash again and it says:

Files that help describe the problem:

      C:\Users\HP_Administrator\AppData\Local\Temp\WER817A.tmp.version.txt

      C:\Users\HP_Administrator\AppData\Local\Temp\WER91F6.tmp.appcompat.txt

      C:\Users\HP_Administrator\AppData\Local\Temp\WERA32D.tmp.hdmp

the files have slightly different  names this time so i figure that its not my computer but the new disc itself. but why would every single copy be like this? is my computer blocking these certain files or is there just an extremely simple explanation and im just a retard?

the technicians at the stores said that there shouldnt be any problems. my computer meets all of the system requirements except for the proccessor (2GHz) as mine is 1.86GHz . but i figured if that is the cause of the problem, it wouldn't be working at all or would be going extremely slow and then eventually come to a stop. but no, it works just fine until after 15 seconds or so it freezes.

i have a feeling it might be a problem with the live update because when i reinstalled the game and started to install the update, i recognized files such as "pccompat.dll and sll_dll.dll" being installed.

the game seems to last longer in a game where im by myself such as a network game where it lasts about 45 seconds. in an online game it lasts about 15 seconds and in campaign it lasts .2 of a second =|.

as you can see, ive put quite the amount of thought and research into this, considering my usual laziness =), and i have absolutely no idea how to fix this.
