Halo 2 goes into input loop with my mouse

I admit that this is really a rare case, but I have a Visiontek XG6 mouse ( http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16826998003 ), which is an otherwise standard 5-button laser mouse with three 4-way hat switches, effectively making it a 17-button mouse. It's really nice for FPSes, and I've used it successfully with Halo: Combat Evolved for PC and Crysis. However, whenever I touch any of the hat switches in Halo 2, the game begins go bonkers and act as if I'm holding down "up" on the menu screen, or continually looking upward in-game. The game works fine otherwise, so far as I can tell. No othergame or application has proven incompatible with this mouse so far; most see it as merely a 5-button mouse, and I remap the hat switches using external software. The input loop happens in Halo 2 whether or not I'm running said software.

The problem is that the inability to use this mouse in a 3-D first-person shooter is a deal-breaker for me, because I am effectively one-handed when it comes to gaming controls.

Has anyone ever experienced any sort of problem like this?

See images at http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16826998003 . See the red circles on the mouse Those are the hat switches that can be moved up, down, left, and right. Normally, the mouse driver software translates them to keystroles based on what you've specified in a setup program (e.g., one hat switch could be mapped to WASD for first-person shooters).

The problem is that Halo 2 doesn't react well to those hat switches. The standard 5 mouse buttons and mouse wheel are fine.
